Mäntäkone

Mäntäkone is a Finnish term that translates to "piston engine." It refers to any engine that utilizes the reciprocating motion of a piston within a cylinder to convert pressure into rotational force. This is a fundamental principle of internal combustion engines, but the term can also be applied more broadly to external combustion engines where the working fluid is heated externally.

The basic operation of a mäntäkone involves a cycle of intake, compression, power, and exhaust, typically within a four-stroke or two-stroke process. Fuel is introduced into the cylinder, compressed by the piston, ignited, and the resulting explosion drives the piston down. This linear motion is then converted into rotary motion by a crankshaft.
