Männäpumput

Männäpumput, also known as piston pumps, are a type of positive displacement pump. They utilize a reciprocating piston moving within a cylinder to move fluid. This movement creates a vacuum on the suction stroke, drawing fluid into the cylinder, and then forces the fluid out through a discharge port on the compression stroke. The action is typically driven by a rotating crankshaft or a camshaft.

The design of a männäpumppu involves a cylinder, a piston with seals, and at least two valves: a suction valve and a discharge valve. The suction valve opens to allow fluid into the cylinder when the piston moves away from the valve, and closes when the piston moves towards it. The discharge valve opens when the pressure inside the cylinder exceeds the pressure in the discharge line, allowing the fluid to be expelled. Männäpumput can be single-acting, where the fluid is pumped in one direction of the piston stroke, or double-acting, where fluid is pumped on both the forward and backward strokes.

These pumps are known for their ability to generate high pressures and deliver a consistent flow rate, independent of discharge pressure. This makes them suitable for a variety of applications, including water supply systems, hydraulic systems, and in industrial processes where precise fluid metering is required. However, they can be prone to wear and require regular maintenance due to the presence of moving parts and seals.
