Männänliikkeeksi is a Finnish term that translates to "piston movement" or "reciprocating motion" in English. It refers to the back-and-forth, linear motion characteristic of a piston within a cylinder. This type of movement is fundamental to the operation of many mechanical devices, most notably internal combustion engines and steam engines.

In an internal combustion engine, the fuel-air mixture is ignited within the cylinder, creating a rapid expansion of gases that pushes the piston downwards. This downward stroke is then reversed, typically by the momentum of a crankshaft and flywheel, or by the force from other pistons in multi-cylinder engines.
