Människosäkerhet, or human security, is a concept that broadens the traditional notion of security from focusing solely on state security to encompass the well-being and protection of individuals. It emphasizes that security should be measured by the safety and freedom from fear and want experienced by people. This approach emerged from a recognition that states are not always the best protectors of their citizens and that a wider range of threats exists.

The concept of human security identifies various dimensions of security, often categorized as freedom from fear and freedom from want. Freedom from fear includes protection from violence, war, crime, and terrorism, as well as from state repression and human rights abuses. Freedom from want addresses threats such as poverty, hunger, disease, environmental degradation, and natural disasters. It highlights the importance of access to basic needs and opportunities for individuals to live dignified lives.

Key actors in promoting human security include international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and individuals themselves, in addition to states. It encourages a more holistic and people-centered approach to security policy, recognizing that development, human rights, and security are interconnected. The goal is to create an environment where individuals can thrive without constant threat to their lives, livelihoods, and dignity.
