Myotische

Myotische is not a standard English medical term. In several languages it is used as an adjective relating to muscle physiology and, more specifically, to myotonia. The closest English equivalent is myotonic.

Myotonia is a neuromuscular phenomenon characterized by delayed relaxation after voluntary contraction or percussion. It occurs in several disorders, most notably myotonic dystrophy types 1 and 2, myotonia congenita (Thomsen or Becker variants), and other channelopathies such as paramyotonia congenita. Symptoms include stiffness, slowed release of grip, a transiently stiff gait, and episodes triggered by cold or sustained activity.

Myotonia results from abnormalities in skeletal muscle ion channels or membrane excitability, leading to abnormal excitability after action potentials. Mutations in CLCN1 (chloride channel) and SCN4A (sodium channel) are common in inherited forms.

Diagnosis uses clinical signs and electromyography, which shows characteristic myotonic discharges with waxing and waning amplitude. Genetic testing confirms specific mutations. Treatment is supportive: physical therapy, avoidance of triggers, and medications such as mexiletine or carbamazepine that reduce myotonia; monitoring for cardiac involvement in congenital forms.

Etymology: from Greek myo- meaning muscle and tonos meaning tone. The English term is myotonic. The term myotische is variably used in non-English medical literature and is not standard in English.
