Myopatiatyyppejä refers to the different classifications of myopathies, which are diseases of the muscle fiber. These conditions affect the voluntary muscles of the body, leading to weakness and wasting. Myopathies can be congenital, meaning they are present from birth, or acquired later in life.

One common classification is based on the underlying cause. This includes genetic myopathies, where a mutation in a specific gene affects muscle protein function. Examples include Duchenne muscular dystrophy and myotonic dystrophy. Inflammatory myopathies, such as polymyositis and dermatomyositis, are autoimmune conditions where the body's immune system attacks its own muscle fibers. Metabolic myopathies arise from defects in the chemical processes that provide energy to muscles, like glycogen storage diseases or lipid storage myopathies. Toxic myopathies can be caused by certain medications, drugs, or environmental toxins.

Another way to categorize myopathies is by the primary site of damage within the muscle fiber. Some myopathies affect the sarcolemma, the cell membrane of muscle cells, leading to problems with muscle contraction signaling. Others impact the contractile proteins themselves, like actin and myosin. Myopathies can also involve the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which stores and releases calcium ions crucial for muscle function, or the mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell responsible for energy production.

The symptoms and severity of myopathies vary widely depending on the specific type and the muscles affected. Common signs include progressive muscle weakness, fatigue, muscle pain, and difficulty with movement. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical examination, blood tests to detect muscle enzymes, electromyography (EMG) to assess muscle electrical activity, and muscle biopsy to examine muscle tissue under a microscope. Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause and may include physical therapy, medications to manage inflammation or pain, and supportive care.
