Muutuvkulu

Muutuvkulu is an Estonian term that translates to "variable cost" in English. It refers to expenses that change in proportion to the production volume of a business. As a company produces more goods or services, its total variable costs increase. Conversely, if production decreases, total variable costs decrease.

Examples of variable costs include raw materials, direct labor directly involved in production, and packaging. If a bakery bakes more bread, it will need more flour, yeast, and sugar (raw materials), and potentially more bakers to handle the increased workload (direct labor). The cost of these inputs will rise directly with the number of loaves produced.

Variable costs are a fundamental concept in economics and business management. They are distinct from fixed costs, which remain constant regardless of production levels, such as rent or salaries of administrative staff. Understanding the difference between variable and fixed costs is crucial for businesses to make informed decisions about pricing, production levels, and profitability analysis.
