Muutosvakaus

Muutosvakaus, often translated as change stability or mutation stability, is a concept in evolutionary biology and genetics. It refers to the tendency for a particular trait or genetic locus to remain unchanged over time, despite the ongoing processes of mutation and selection. In essence, it describes the resistance of a system or characteristic to alteration.

This stability can arise from several factors. Pleiotropy, where a single gene affects multiple traits, can contribute to muutosvakaus if mutations at that locus would have detrimental effects on other essential functions. Similarly, epistasis, interactions between different genes, can buffer mutations from having a noticeable phenotypic impact. Furthermore, strong purifying selection actively removes deleterious mutations, preserving the existing state.
