Mustaqillik

Mustaqillik is a term in the Uzbek language that denotes the state of being independent and self-governing, free from external control, and able to determine political, economic, and social matters. It can refer to national independence as well as personal autonomy or freedom in everyday life.

Etymology and usage: The word is formed from the Uzbek adjective mustaqil, meaning independent, with the suffix -lik to create an abstract noun representing the state or quality of independence. In Uzbek, the term is written as Mustaqillik and is widely used in political, educational, and cultural contexts. It has cognate forms in other Turkic languages and appears in similar discussions about freedom and sovereignty.

Historical and contemporary context: In modern Uzbekistan, mustaqillik is central to national identity. Uzbekistan proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union on August 31, 1991, and the date is celebrated annually as Mustaqillik Kuni (Independence Day).
