Munuaissäätely refers to the physiological processes by which the kidneys maintain the body's internal balance, or homeostasis. This involves regulating fluid volume, electrolyte concentrations, and waste product excretion. The kidneys achieve this through complex mechanisms of filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.

Filtration occurs in the glomerulus, where blood is filtered to remove waste products like urea and excess salts. The resulting filtrate then passes through the renal tubules. Here, essential substances such as glucose, amino acids, and most of the water are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. Simultaneously, the tubules secrete additional waste products and excess ions from the blood into the filtrate.

Hormonal control plays a crucial role in munuaissäätely. For instance, antidiuretic hormone (ADH) influences water reabsorption, helping to control urine concentration and overall body water levels. Aldosterone regulates sodium and potassium balance, impacting blood pressure. The kidneys also contribute to red blood cell production by releasing erythropoietin and help regulate blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.
