Multispectral imaging is a technique used to capture image data at specific wavelength bands across the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike standard digital cameras that typically capture images in the red, green, and blue (RGB) visible light spectrum, multispectral imaging systems can acquire images in additional spectral regions, such as near-infrared (NIR), short-wave infrared (SWIR), or thermal infrared. These different spectral bands provide unique information about the material properties of objects within the scene.

The principle behind multispectral imaging is that different materials reflect, absorb, and emit electromagnetic radiation differently depending on the wavelength. By analyzing the intensity of radiation in these various spectral bands, it is possible to differentiate between materials that may appear identical in a standard RGB image. For example, healthy vegetation has a distinct spectral signature in the NIR region compared to stressed or diseased vegetation.

Multispectral imaging finds applications in a wide range of fields. In remote sensing, it is used for environmental monitoring, agricultural assessment, geological surveying, and urban planning. Satellites and aerial platforms equipped with multispectral sensors can provide valuable data for crop health monitoring, identifying water bodies, mapping land cover, and detecting pollution. In industry, it can be used for quality control, material sorting, and defect detection. Medical imaging also utilizes multispectral techniques for disease diagnosis and tissue analysis. The data acquired from multispectral imaging is often processed using specialized software to extract meaningful information, often resulting in false-color composite images or spectral indices that highlight specific features.
