Multipointtiyhteyksiä, known in English as multipoint connections, refers to a network configuration where more than two devices can communicate directly with each other simultaneously. This is in contrast to point-to-point connections, which involve a direct link between only two endpoints, or broadcast connections, which send data to all devices on a network regardless of whether they need it.

In a multipoint connection, a single communication channel is shared among multiple terminals. This sharing can be managed through various techniques, such as time-division multiplexing (TDM) or frequency-division multiplexing (FDM), which allocate different time slots or frequency bands to each device. Alternatively, statistical multiplexing can be used, where bandwidth is allocated dynamically based on demand.

One common application of multipoint connections is in teleconferencing, where multiple participants can join a single audio or video call. This allows for more efficient use of network resources compared to establishing individual point-to-point connections between each pair of participants. Another example can be found in older network technologies like bus topology, where multiple devices share the same cable. Modern wireless networks also often utilize multipoint principles for device communication. The key advantage is the ability to establish communication between several parties without needing to create a separate connection for every possible pair.
