Multiplefluid is a modeling approach in fluid dynamics that describes systems containing two or more interacting fluids, each with distinct physical properties. Unlike single‑fluid or two‑fluid models, the multiplefluid framework treats each constituent, such as plasma species, gas phases, or particulate suspensions, as a separate continuum. Continuity, momentum, and energy equations are written for each constituent and coupled through interspecies interaction terms that capture momentum and energy exchange, mass transfer, and chemical reactions. The mass‑integrated properties of the overall mixture are then derived from the individual component variables.

The technique is used across several fields. In plasma physics it enables detailed studies of electron, ion, and neutral species dynamics in partially ionized gases, essential for understanding space weather and fusion plasmas. In meteorology and oceanography, multiplefluid models simulate the interaction between water, air, and ice, improving cloud formation and precipitation prediction. In chemical engineering, the approach captures the behavior of multiphase reactors and separation processes.

Key advantages of the multiplefluid approach are its flexibility in accounting for composition‑dependent material properties and the ability to incorporate complex interspecies physics such as recombination or diffusion. However, the model increases computational cost and requires accurate specification of coupling parameters, which can be challenging in experiments.

Current research focuses on developing efficient numerical schemes, coupling with kinetic models for rarefied regimes, and applying the method to emerging areas such as microfluidic devices and astrophysical shock studies. The multiplefluid concept continues to play a vital role in bridging microscopic interactions and macroscopic behavior across numerous scientific disciplines.
