Mulkkausmenetelmistä, or "mulching methods" in English, refers to the practice of covering the soil surface with a layer of material. This layer, known as mulch, can be organic, such as wood chips, straw, or compost, or inorganic, like gravel or plastic sheeting. The primary purpose of mulching is to improve soil health and plant growth.

One significant benefit of mulching is moisture retention. The mulch layer acts as a barrier, reducing evaporation from the soil surface, which means less frequent watering is needed. This is particularly advantageous in drier climates or during periods of drought. Mulching also helps to suppress weed growth by blocking sunlight from reaching weed seeds in the soil, thereby preventing germination and reducing competition for water and nutrients.

Furthermore, mulching moderates soil temperature. It insulates the soil, keeping it cooler in the summer by reflecting sunlight and warmer in the winter by trapping heat. This temperature regulation protects plant roots from extreme fluctuations, promoting healthier root development. Organic mulches decompose over time, adding valuable nutrients and organic matter to the soil, which improves soil structure and fertility.
