Muistihierarkiat

Muistihierarkiat refers to the layered structure of computer memory, designed to balance speed, capacity, and cost. At the top of this hierarchy are the fastest but smallest and most expensive memory types, while the bottom contains the slowest, largest, and cheapest. This organization exploits the principle of locality, where programs tend to access data that is spatially or temporally close to previously accessed data.

The highest level typically consists of CPU registers, which are directly accessible by the processor and hold data currently being processed. Immediately below registers is CPU cache memory, often divided into multiple levels (L1, L2, L3). L1 cache is the fastest and smallest, usually located on the CPU chip itself, followed by L2 and L3 which are larger and slightly slower but still significantly faster than main memory.

Main memory, or RAM (Random Access Memory), forms the next tier. RAM is much larger than cache but slower and volatile, meaning its contents are lost when power is removed. This is where actively running programs and their data are stored.

Below RAM are secondary storage devices, such as Solid State Drives (SSDs) and Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). These offer much larger capacities and are non-volatile, retaining data even without power. However, they are considerably slower than RAM.

Finally, at the bottom of the hierarchy are tertiary storage and offline storage, like magnetic tape or optical discs. These are used for long-term archival and backup purposes, offering the largest capacities at the lowest cost but with the slowest access times. The goal of the memory hierarchy is to provide the illusion of a very large and fast memory by keeping frequently used data in the faster, upper levels.
