Morfemet

Morfemet is a term used in linguistic morphology to denote a theoretical unit that combines grammatical meaning with a specific phonological form. In morfemet-based analyses, a single morfemet is the smallest unit that carries a defined feature bundle—such as tense, number, or case—and has a stable surface shape within a given word. Proponents argue that separating content from its realization helps explain allomorphy and cross-language variation in inflectional and derivational systems.

Origin and usage: The term morfemet is formed from morpheme-related roots and is not part of the standard terminology in most grammars. It appears in a minority of theoretical works and in discussions of morphophonology and computational morphology. The concept is presented as a way to model the mapping from grammatical features to surface form more explicitly than the traditional morpheme concept.

Examples: In a hypothetical language, a plural morfemet might have several realizations (-s, -z, or -ɪən) according to the following sound, illustrating how form-meaning mapping is treated as a tight unit rather than as a single invariant sequence.
