Moravskoslezský

Moravskoslezský kraj, commonly known as the Moravian-Silesian Region, is an administrative unit of the Czech Republic located in the northeastern part of the country. It borders Poland to the north and the Czech regions Olomoucký kraj to the west and Zlínský kraj to the south. Its capital and largest city is Ostrava.

Geography and districts: The region covers about 5,400 square kilometers and includes parts of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids and the Ostravská pánev (Ostrava Basin). It comprises six districts: Bruntál, Frýdek-Místek, Karviná, Nový Jičín, Opava, and Ostrava-město. The area has a strong industrial heritage, notably coal mining in the Karviná basin and iron and steel production around Ostrava.

History and administration: The Moravskoslezský kraj was established in 2000 as part of the Czech regional reform. It combines areas historically associated with Moravia and Silesia, which is reflected in its name and cultural traditions.

Economy and culture: The economy blends heavy industry with services, including mining, steel production, and engineering, along with growing sectors in manufacturing and research. Cultural life features institutions such as the Silesian Museum in Opava and the Landek Park mining museum in Ostrava. The region has a diverse heritage, including a significant Polish minority.

Education and transport: Higher education centers are located in Ostrava, including the University of Ostrava and the Technical University of Ostrava (VŠB-TUO). The region is served by the D1 motorway, regional rail lines, and Ostrava’s international airport, linking it with Prague, Brno, and international destinations.
