Moottoriyksiköitä, often translated as "motor units," are the fundamental functional components of the muscular system. A motor unit consists of a single motor neuron and all of the muscle fibers it innervates. This means that one nerve cell is responsible for activating a specific group of muscle cells. When a motor neuron receives a signal from the central nervous system, it transmits this signal to all the muscle fibers connected to it, causing them to contract simultaneously.

The size of a motor unit can vary significantly. In muscles requiring fine motor control, such as those in the eyes or fingers, a single motor neuron may control only a few muscle fibers. This allows for precise and delicate movements. Conversely, in larger muscles involved in powerful movements, like those in the legs, a single motor neuron can control hundreds or even thousands of muscle fibers. This arrangement enables the generation of substantial force.

The recruitment of motor units is a crucial mechanism for controlling muscle force. When a weak stimulus is applied, only a few motor units, typically those with fewer muscle fibers (smaller motor units), are activated. As the strength of the stimulus increases, more motor units are recruited, including those with more muscle fibers (larger motor units). This graded recruitment allows the nervous system to produce a wide range of muscle forces, from a gentle grip to a maximal effort. The precise coordination and activation of these motor units are essential for all voluntary movements.
