Montgomeryite

Montgomeryite is a rare phosphate mineral with the chemical formula Ca4Al10(PO4)8(OH)2(H2O)28. It is characterized by its monoclinic crystal system and typically appears as light blue, white, or colorless crystals. The mineral was first discovered in the Hurricane Mine, Pima County, Arizona, and was named after Arthur Montgomery, a prospector and mineral collector.

Montgomeryite is often found in association with other phosphate minerals such as crandallite, goyazite, and florencite. It forms under hydrothermal conditions and is usually found in pegmatites and altered granitic rocks. Its formation often involves the alteration of feldspars and other aluminum-bearing minerals.

The structure of montgomeryite is complex, featuring layers of aluminum and phosphate polyhedra. The presence of water molecules within its structure contributes to its hydrated nature. Due to its rarity and distinct blue color, montgomeryite is of interest to mineral collectors and geologists studying phosphate mineral formation.
