Montaai

Montaai is a small municipality located in the southern province of Valerio, within the larger region of Santeria. The town covers an area of approximately 18 square kilometres and sits at an elevation of about 520 metres above sea level, surrounded by gentle hills and the Montaai River, which provides a modest source of irrigation for local agriculture.

The earliest records of Montaai date back to the early 14th century, when it was mentioned in a royal charter as a settlement of strategic importance on the trade route between the coastal cities of Larius and the inland town of Vellaro. Over the centuries, the village grew slowly, its economy historically centered on small‑scale farming and artisanal wood‑working, a tradition that remains visible in the local crafts market.

According to the 2021 census, the population of Montaai numbered 1,872 residents, with a demographic profile that is largely stable but shows a slight decline among the younger age groups due to urban migration. The local government administers the community through a council headed by a mayor elected every four years.

Cultural life in Montaai revolves around its patron saint, Saint Gerardo, celebrated each year on 2 November with a festival that features traditional music, folk dances, and a communal feast of local cuisine. The central place of worship, the Church of Saint Gerardo, dates from the 16th century and is the town’s architectural highlight.

Transportation links include a regional road that connects Montaai to the provincial capital, Giovan, as well as a nearby bus service that links residents to larger regional hubs. The town also maintains a primary school that serves the local population, while secondary education is accessed in Giovan.
