Monolagekapazität refers to the maximum number of data bits that can be reliably stored on a single layer of a storage medium. This is a fundamental concept in data storage technology, particularly relevant for optical media like CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs, as well as for flash memory devices.

The monolagekapazität is determined by several factors. These include the physical density of the storage elements (e.g., pits and lands on an optical disc, or charge trapped in floating gates in flash memory), the precision of the reading and writing mechanisms, and the error correction codes employed. Higher monolagekapazität means more information can be stored in a given physical space on a single layer.

For optical media, increasing monolagekapazität is often achieved by reducing the size of the pits and lands and narrowing the track pitch, which requires shorter wavelength lasers for reading and writing.
