Monokotiset

Monokotiset is a group of flowering plants that belongs to the class Monocotyledoneae. This group is characterized by having a single cotyledon in their seeds, hence the name monocotyledon. The monocot seeds also have a specific arrangement of vascular tissues and a characteristic vascular bundle.

There are around 80,000 to 100,000 species within the category of monocots. This significant number makes it one of the most diverse groups of flowering plants. Monocots include numerous plant families, such as orchids, irises, lilies, grasses, and bananas. These plants have various adaptations, such as specialized leaves and reproductive structures that aid in pollination.

Monocots have a range of growth habits. From small succulent plants to massive palm trees, and from annual crops to perennial herbs, monocots exhibit a great deal of variation. Their distribution ranges from tropical to temperate climates, and they can be found in both aquatic and terrestrial environments.

All monocots have a characteristic structure known as Kranz anatomy in their leaves. This specialized arrangement of cells in the mesophyll allows for a more efficient rate of photosynthesis. Monocots also exhibit a specific pattern of vascular tissue that is different from the more specialized arrangement found in dicotyledons.
