Monohydroxybenzene

Monohydroxybenzene is the chemical compound with the formula C6H5OH. It is also commonly known as phenol. It is an aromatic organic compound consisting of a phenyl group covalently bonded to a hydroxyl group. Phenol is a white crystalline solid that is volatile and has a distinct sweet, tar-like odor. It is a moderately strong acid and its conjugate base is the phenoxide ion.

Phenol is a significant industrial chemical. It is produced on a large scale, primarily for the production of plastics, such as phenolic resins (Bakelite) and polycarbonates. It is also used in the synthesis of other organic compounds, including caprolactam (a precursor to nylon) and bisphenol A. Historically, phenol was used as an antiseptic and disinfectant, but its use in this capacity has largely been replaced by less toxic alternatives.

Phenol is soluble in water and many organic solvents. Its reactivity is influenced by the electron-donating effect of the hydroxyl group, which activates the aromatic ring towards electrophilic substitution reactions, particularly at the ortho and para positions. It can undergo various reactions, including etherification, esterification, and oxidation.

Exposure to phenol can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. In higher concentrations or prolonged exposure, it can be toxic. Therefore, appropriate safety precautions are necessary when handling this chemical. It is classified as a hazardous substance.
