Monivärikuvaaminen, which translates to "multicolor imaging" or "multispectral imaging" in English, refers to the technique of capturing images at various specific wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike standard color photography which typically captures red, green, and blue light, monivärikuvaaminen utilizes multiple, often narrow, spectral bands. These bands can extend beyond the visible light range into the ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) portions of the spectrum.

The principle behind monivärikuvaaminen is that different materials and substances reflect, absorb, or emit electromagnetic radiation differently at various wavelengths. By analyzing the intensity of light recorded in each spectral band, it becomes possible to differentiate between objects that may appear identical to the human eye.
