Monikerroslevyissä

Monikerroslevyissä, often translated as multilayer discs or optical discs with multiple layers, refers to the technology used in certain optical media formats that allows for increased data storage capacity. This is achieved by incorporating more than one data-recording layer within a single disc. Standard optical discs like CDs and single-layer DVDs typically have only one layer of data.

In multilayer discs, a semi-reflective layer separates the individual data layers. A laser used for reading or writing data can be focused to different depths within the disc, allowing it to read or write to specific layers. By stacking these layers, the total storage space of the disc is significantly increased without altering the physical dimensions of the disc itself.

The most common application of this technology is found in DVDs and Blu-ray discs. For instance, a standard dual-layer DVD (DVD-9) has two data layers, doubling its capacity compared to a single-layer DVD (DVD-5). Similarly, Blu-ray discs can also utilize multiple layers to achieve their much larger storage capacities, ranging from 25GB for a single-layer disc to 100GB or more for certain dual-layer or triple-layer formats. The development of multilayer disc technology has been crucial for storing larger files, high-definition video, and extensive software applications on optical media.
