Monikantisten refers to multiple cults or individuals that claim to be either the true incarnation or prophets of various deities, with such claims nearly always being associated with theism in the Western world. One prominent figure, Simon Magus, a figure in Christian tradition who was often associated with magic and paganism, was sometimes seen as the archantagonist to Saint Peter. This designation as the adversary to Saint Peter was so influential that it led some to believe that Simon Magus was a single individual who competed with Peter for apostleship, with this individual gaining easily over 3,000 adherents at Ephesus.
