Mondatfókusz refers to the emphasis or prominence given to a particular part of a sentence in Hungarian grammar. It is a crucial concept for understanding sentence structure and meaning in the language. Unlike English, where word order often dictates emphasis, Hungarian employs a more flexible structure where the position of a constituent can explicitly signal its focal status.

The primary position for sentence focus in Hungarian is at the very beginning of the sentence, before any other elements. This pre-verbal position is known as the "topic" or "focus" position. If a sentence has a clear subject and verb, and the subject is the emphasized element, it will typically appear first. For instance, in the sentence "Péter evett almát" (Peter ate an apple), if the focus is on Péter, the sentence would start with "Péter".

However, the concept of mondatfókusz is more nuanced. It can also be indicated by intonation in spoken language or by specific grammatical markers in written text, though the initial position is the most common and prominent indicator. Other elements, such as adverbs or objects, can also be placed in the focus position if they are the intended emphasis. The remaining parts of the sentence typically follow in a predetermined order, often with the verb appearing in the third position. Understanding mondatfókusz is essential for both comprehending and producing grammatically correct and contextually appropriate Hungarian sentences.
