Molekyltype refers to the classification of molecules based on their fundamental structural and compositional characteristics. This categorization helps scientists understand and predict the behavior of different substances.

One primary way to classify molecules is by their elemental composition. This leads to categories like organic molecules, which are carbon-based and often form the basis of life, and inorganic molecules, which encompass all other compounds, including water, salts, and minerals. Within these broad groups, further distinctions can be made. For example, organic molecules are often classified by functional groups, such as alcohols, ketones, or carboxylic acids, which dictate their reactivity.

Another important classification is based on molecular structure, including whether a molecule is simple or complex. Molecules can be held together by covalent bonds, where electrons are shared between atoms, or ionic bonds, where electrons are transferred, forming charged ions that attract each other.
