For example, the molecular weight of water (H2O) is calculated by adding the atomic mass of two hydrogen atoms (approximately 1.01 amu each) and one oxygen atom (approximately 16.00 amu), resulting in a molecular weight of approximately 18.02 amu.

Molecular weight is a dimensionless quantity, but it is often used interchangeably with molar mass, which has units of grams per mole (g/mol). Molar mass represents the mass of one mole of a substance, where a mole is a unit of quantity equal to Avogadro's number of constituent particles. This equivalence arises because the atomic mass unit and the gram per mole scale are numerically related. Understanding molecular weight is crucial for stoichiometry, chemical reactions, and determining the composition of substances.
