Mohács

Mohács is a town in Baranya county, southern Hungary, situated on the right bank of the Danube River near the Croatian border. It serves as the administrative center of Mohács district and lies in a historically important Danube valley.

The Battle of Mohács, fought near the town on 29 August 1526, was a decisive Ottoman victory over the Kingdom of Hungary. The death of King Louis II during the engagement precipitated a rapid collapse of the medieval Hungarian state and led to long Ottoman rule in central Hungary and subsequent political reorganizations in the region.

A cultural highlight is the Busójárás festival, a winter carnival that features masked figure costumes known as busó. The event, which aims to scare away winter and welcome spring, is held annually around the time of Shrovetide and has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Today Mohács is a town with historic architecture and a riverfront that reflects its long position as a trading and agricultural community. Its economy includes agriculture, light industry, and small-scale commerce, while the Danube and surrounding landscapes attract domestic and international visitors. The town also serves as a transport and customs link near the Croatia border and is connected to the regional rail and road network.
