Modulooperaattori, often shortened to "modulo," is a mathematical operation that returns the remainder of a division. In programming, it is represented by the percentage sign (%). For example, 10 modulo 3 (10 % 3) results in 1, because 10 divided by 3 is 3 with a remainder of 1. Similarly, 7 modulo 2 (7 % 2) is 1, as 7 is an odd number. Even numbers always result in 0 when divided by 2 using the modulo operator.

The modulo operation is fundamental in various computational tasks. It's frequently used for tasks such as checking if a number is even or odd, determining divisibility, and implementing cyclical behaviors like wrapping around an array index. For instance, to cycle through a sequence of items of length N, one can use `index % N` to ensure the index always stays within the valid range [0, N-1].
