Modulointimenetelmä, also known as modular arithmetic, is a system of arithmetic for integers, where numbers "wrap around" after reaching a certain value, known as the modulus. This concept is fundamental in various fields of mathematics and computer science. In modular arithmetic, two numbers are considered equivalent if they have the same remainder when divided by the modulus. This is denoted by the congruence relation, written as a ≡ b (mod m), where a and b are integers, and m is the modulus.

The basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division can be performed in modular arithmetic, with results also being congruent modulo m. For example, in modulo 5 arithmetic, 3 + 4 ≡ 2 (mod 5), because 7 leaves a remainder of 2 when divided by 5. Similarly, 3 × 4 ≡ 2 (mod 5), as 12 leaves a remainder of 2 when divided by 5.

Modular arithmetic has numerous applications in real-world scenarios. It is used in error-detecting codes, such as the Universal Product Code (UPC), and in cryptography, where it forms the basis for many encryption algorithms. In computer science, modular arithmetic is used in hash functions and pseudorandom number generators. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in number theory, particularly in the study of prime numbers and the distribution of integers.
