Modulatsioonisügavus

Modulatsioonisügavus refers to the depth or intensity of modulation in an analog or digital signal. In the context of analog modulation, it quantifies how much the carrier signal's properties, such as amplitude or frequency, are altered by the modulating signal. For amplitude modulation (AM), modulatsioonisügavus is often expressed as a percentage and indicates the extent of variation in the carrier's amplitude. A higher depth means a greater change in amplitude. In frequency modulation (FM), while often discussed in terms of frequency deviation, the concept of "depth" relates to the ratio of the frequency deviation to the modulating signal's frequency.

For digital modulation techniques, modulatsioonisügavus can be interpreted in a similar vein, relating to the magnitude of changes in the carrier's properties. For instance, in some digital amplitude-shift keying (ASK) schemes, the difference in amplitude levels between the "on" and "off" states, relative to the carrier amplitude, can be considered a form of modulation depth. Similarly, in digital phase-shift keying (PSK), the extent of phase shifts can be related to the concept of modulation depth. Understanding modulatsioonisügavus is crucial for optimizing signal quality, preventing distortion, and ensuring efficient transmission. Incorrectly setting the modulation depth can lead to issues like overmodulation, which causes signal clipping and a loss of information, or undermodulation, which results in a weak signal with a poor signal-to-noise ratio.
