Modulation and demodulation are core processes in transmitting information over physical media. Modulation modifies a carrier wave to carry the information signal, enabling transmission, while demodulation recovers the original signal at the receiver. Together, they form the basis of communication systems that link transmitters and receivers over air, wire, or fiber.

Modulation involves varying a carrier’s property in response to the information signal. This can be done in analog form, by continuously changing the carrier’s amplitude, frequency, or phase (AM, FM, PM), or in digital form, by mapping discrete symbols derived from bit streams (PSK, QAM, FSK, ASK). Digital modulation schemes are designed to optimize data rate, bandwidth efficiency, and resilience to noise.

Demodulation is the reverse process. It detects the carrier and reconstructs the transmitted signal by reversing the modulation operations. Demodulators may perform coherent detection, requiring carrier synchronization, or non-coherent detection. They also contend with channel effects such as noise, distortion, and interference, often employing equalization, synchronization, and error-correction techniques to recover the original data accurately.

In practice, modulation-demodulation enables communication across diverse media, including radio airwaves, telephone lines, fiber optics, and cable systems. In digital communications, the demodulator translates received symbols back into a bitstream, with performance typically measured by data rate, bandwidth usage, and error rate, all influenced by signal-to-noise ratio and channel conditions.

The concept underpins many technologies, from traditional radio broadcasting and television to modern modems, Wi-Fi, cellular networks, and optical communication systems. It provides a unified framework for designing systems that efficiently and reliably convey information over imperfect channels.
