The fundamental principle involves altering one or more properties of a carrier wave, such as its amplitude, frequency, or phase, in accordance with the information signal. This process allows for the transmission of data over a medium, like radio waves or electrical wires, where the original information signal might not be suitable for direct transmission.

In amplitude modulation (AM), the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied in proportion to the instantaneous amplitude of the message signal. Frequency modulation (FM) varies the frequency of the carrier wave, while phase modulation (PM) alters its phase. Each modulation technique has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding bandwidth requirements, noise susceptibility, and complexity.

The reverse process of demodulation is then required at the receiving end to extract the original information from the modulated carrier signal.
