Modulaatiojärjestelmä, known in English as a modulation system, refers to a method or process used to encode information onto a carrier wave. This process is fundamental to modern telecommunications, enabling the transmission of data, audio, and video signals over various media such as radio waves, optical fibers, and electrical wires. The core idea is to alter one or more properties of a carrier signal, typically a sinusoid, in accordance with the information to be transmitted.

There are numerous types of modulation systems, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Common examples include Amplitude Modulation (AM), where the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied, and Frequency Modulation (FM), where the frequency of the carrier wave is varied. Phase Modulation (PM) alters the phase of the carrier wave. More complex digital modulation schemes like Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) combine amplitude and phase variations to encode multiple bits of data per symbol.

The choice of modulation system depends on factors such as the desired data rate, bandwidth availability, noise immunity, and the characteristics of the transmission channel. For instance, FM is often preferred for audio broadcasting due to its better resistance to static compared to AM.
