Modifier nouns, also known as noun adjuncts or attributive nouns, are nouns that function as adjectives to modify another noun. They typically appear immediately before the noun they describe, forming a compound noun or a noun phrase. For example, in the phrase "computer science," "computer" is a modifier noun describing the type of science. Similarly, in "kitchen table," "kitchen" modifies "table" to specify its purpose or location.

Modifier nouns do not change their form to agree in number or gender with the noun they modify. They retain their singular form even when the head noun is plural. For instance, we say "two car garage" not "two cars garage," and "a book club" not "a books club." The meaning of the phrase is determined by the relationship between the modifier noun and the head noun, which can indicate purpose, origin, material, type, or a part of a whole.

Identifying modifier nouns is crucial for understanding sentence structure and meaning. While they look like the first part of a compound noun, they can also stand alone in a phrase. The key is their function: to describe or specify the noun that follows. This grammatical feature is common in English and contributes to the language's flexibility in creating new vocabulary.
