Modernej

Modernej is not a standalone Slovak word but the feminine singular form of the adjective moderný when it agrees with a feminine noun in certain cases, most commonly in the locative. It appears in phrases such as v modernej dobe, meaning in the modern age or contemporary times. This form reflects how adjectives in Slovak state agreement for feminine nouns in the locative singular. For masculine or neuter nouns in the same context, different forms are used (for example in phrases like v modernom období).

The root modern- comes from Latin modernus, with development through European languages. In Slovak, the sense of modernization and related vocabulary entered mainly through intellectual and cultural currents of the 19th and 20th centuries, contributing to standard usage in literature, journalism, and scholarly writing.

In texts that use proper diacritics, modernej appears exactly as modernej; in contexts where diacritics are omitted, it appears without marks as modernej. While Slovak uses modernej in established phrases like v modernej dobe, other Central European languages employ their own inflected forms to express similar meanings (for example Czech moderní dobu).
