Core principles include modularity and configurability to respond to evolving needs; sustainability and lifecycle thinking that account for materials, manufacture, use, and end of life; participatory design inviting stakeholders and end users; openness and collaboration through documentation and, where possible, open‑source approaches; and a focus on ethical data use and privacy in digital contexts.

Applications span architecture and the built environment, consumer products designed for repair and upgrade, digital services built from modular components, and urban planning strategies that prioritize adaptable public spaces.

Reception to Modernare is mixed. Proponents view it as a practical framework for resilience, inclusivity, and long-term value, while critics argue that the term can be abstract or co-opted as marketing. Real adoption often requires organizational change, standards, and sustained commitment.
