Governance and ethics: Effective moderatorteams strive for transparency, consistency, and fairness, while protecting user privacy. They should mitigate bias, maintain impartiality, and follow platform-wide policy. Documentation and public reporting of actions may be used to build trust.

Challenges and examples: Burnout, harassment targeting moderators, time-zone coordination, and policy ambiguity can complicate work. Notable platforms with active moderator teams include Reddit, Stack Exchange, and various large forums and Discord communities, where volunteer teams help sustain healthy discussions.
