MobilVariantens

Mobilvariantens is a range of special mobile pavement layers developed and produced by European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA). These layers have been designed to extend the pavement service life and improve road safety.

The main objective behind the creation of Mobilvariantens is to provide a solution that can handle the ever-increasing traffic flow and loads under various climatic conditions. The Mobility-Selective Distress evidence exists (MoabiSD) has indicated that the conventional asphalt pavement layers are not sufficient to deal with these stresses. As a result, the Mobilvariantens features advanced asphalt technologies that provide better resistance to various forms of pavement distress such as potholing and rutting.

The Mobilvariantens structure consists of four fundamental layers. The base and binder courses are designed to provide a higher loading capacity and resistance to linear dip, which directly impacts the pavement longevity. The surface course mobilizes within the base by dragging/lifting the edges of aggregate particles down into the voids in the base course, allowing them to be compacted to their individual self-compaction level.

The Mobilvariantens features have been observed in numerous field trials across Europe. Results have shown that these special pavement layers perform significantly better compared to the conventional pavement layers. They lead to increased total pavement life, lower maintenance costs, and further reduce the burden on the overall pavement structure.
