Mixosauria

Mixosauria is an extinct clade of early marine reptiles within the ichthyosauriforms. They are regarded as a transitional group between more primitive ichthyosauriforms and the later ichthyosaurs. The group appears in the early to middle Triassic and persisted through the Middle Triassic before giving way to more derived forms later in the Triassic. The type genus is Mixosaurus; other members are known from various Triassic deposits of Europe and Asia.

Anatomy and ecology: Mixosaurs were dolphin-like in overall body plan, with elongated bodies, paddle-like limbs, and a tail adapted for efficient swimming. They possessed conical teeth and jaws suited to a carnivorous, piscivorous diet. Their skulls and skeletons show a mix of primitive and derived features, illustrating the stepwise specialization toward the ichthyosaur condition. They inhabited shallow to shelf seas and are interpreted as largely marine predators.

Fossil record and significance: Well-preserved mixosaurid fossils have been found at Monte San Giorgio in the Alps–Lombardy region and in other Triassic marine sequences across Europe and Asia. These fossils document the transition from terrestrial or semi-aquatic ancestors to fully aquatic ichthyosauriforms and help illuminate the evolution of ichthyosauriform locomotion and feeding adaptations.

Taxonomic status: Systematic placement of Mixosauria has varied. In many classifications it is treated as a stem group or early clade within Ichthyosauriformes, sometimes assembled into the broader grouping Mixosauroidea. As such, Mixosauria is considered paraphyletic by some authors, reflecting its role as a lineage near the base of the ichthyosaur radiation. Overall, it represents an important stage in the aquatic adaptation of ichthyosauriform reptiles.
