Mittefiguraalsed

Mittefiguraalsed is a term used in Estonian art discourse to describe artworks that do not depict recognizable people, objects, or scenes. Such works prioritize form, color, line, texture, and composition over representational imagery, aiming to convey meaning or mood through abstraction rather than likeness.

Etymology and scope: The word is formed from mitte (not) and figuraalsed (figural or figurative). In practice, mittefiguraalsed covers a range of non-representational approaches, including geometric abstraction, lyrical abstraction, color-field painting, and other modes that emphasize material and formal relationships rather than depicted subjects. The term is often used interchangeably with non-figuratiivne or non-figuraalne in Estonian-language criticism.

Characteristics: Typical features include simplified or purified forms, emphasis on spatial relationships, and attention to the interplay of color, light, rhythm, and surface texture. Works may be highly organized and precise or more gestural and intuitive, but they share the goal of disengaging from direct optical representation.
