Mittausyksikköinä, or units of measurement, are standardized quantities used to express the magnitude of a physical property. They are essential in science, engineering, and everyday life for comparing and communicating measurements accurately. Units can be classified into several categories, including base units, derived units, and supplementary units.

Base units are the fundamental units from which all other units are derived. The International System of Units (SI) defines seven base units: meter (m) for length, kilogram (kg) for mass, second (s) for time, ampere (A) for electric current, kelvin (K) for temperature, mole (mol) for amount of substance, and candela (cd) for luminous intensity.

Derived units are formed by combining base units through mathematical operations. For example, the unit for speed is meters per second (m/s), which is derived from the base units of length and time. Derived units can also have special names, such as the newton (N) for force, which is defined as one kilogram-meter per second squared (kg·m/s²).

Supplementary units are used to express specific quantities that are not base quantities but are necessary for complete specification of certain physical phenomena. The radian (rad) and steradian (sr) are examples of supplementary units used to measure plane angles and solid angles, respectively.

The choice of units is crucial for consistency and precision in measurements. The SI system is widely used globally due to its coherence and the ease with which it can be applied across different fields. However, other systems of units, such as the Imperial system and the US customary system, are also in use, particularly in certain industries and regions. Conversion between different systems of units is essential for accurate communication and understanding of measurements.
