Mittatoleranssit

Mittatoleranssit refers to the permissible variation in the dimensions of a manufactured part. In engineering and manufacturing, it is virtually impossible to produce a component with exact, precise dimensions. Therefore, a tolerance is specified to indicate the acceptable range of deviation from the nominal or target dimension. This range is crucial for ensuring that parts can be assembled correctly and function as intended, even if individual components vary slightly.

The specification of tolerances is a critical aspect of technical drawings and product design. A nominal dimension is the ideal size, while the upper and lower limits define the acceptable boundaries. For example, a shaft might have a nominal diameter of 20 mm with a tolerance of +0.02 mm to -0.01 mm. This means the actual diameter of the shaft can be anywhere between 20.01 mm and 19.99 mm and still be considered acceptable.

Tolerances are typically expressed in one of two ways: bilateral or unilateral. Bilateral tolerance allows for variation in both positive and negative directions from the nominal dimension, as in the example above. Unilateral tolerance restricts variation to only one side of the nominal dimension, with the other side being at the nominal value or having zero tolerance.

The selection of appropriate tolerances depends on several factors, including the function of the part, the manufacturing process capabilities, cost considerations, and the required level of precision. Overly tight tolerances can significantly increase manufacturing costs due to the need for more precise machinery and quality control, while excessively large tolerances can lead to functional problems and poor assembly. Therefore, engineers carefully balance these factors to achieve the optimal balance between functionality, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness.
