It is denoted by the minus sign (−) and forms part of the core four operations taught in primary school mathematics curricula across Finland and neighboring Nordic countries. The operation functions by taking a minuend and subtracting a subtrahend, yielding a difference. The concept extends to negative numbers, allowing subtraction to also describe number negation, as in \(5 - 8 = -3\).
