It encompasses where minerals form, the physical and chemical environment at the time of formation, and the stages by which elements are organized into crystalline substances with characteristic structures and compositions.

Mineralorigin classifies mineral formation into primary and secondary pathways. Primary origins include crystallization from silicate melts during igneous differentiation and solidification, as well as crystallization from hydrothermal fluids that circulate through rocks. Evaporation of saline waters can precipitate evaporite minerals, and metamorphic conditions can drive recrystallization and the growth of new mineral assemblages. Secondary origins involve alteration and diagenesis, where existing minerals react or recrystallize under changing temperature, pressure, or chemical conditions, producing different minerals. Biological activity, or biomineralization, also contributes minerals in certain systems, though this pathway is often treated separately in geochemistry.

To determine mineralorigin, geologists examine textures, mineral associations, zoning patterns, inclusions, and fluid-inclusion evidence. Isotopic ratios, trace-element chemistry, and dating of minerals or their host rocks provide timing and environmental information. Comparative studies across rock types and tectonic settings help distinguish igneous, metamorphic, hydrothermal, evaporitic, and diagenetic sources.
