Milankovis

Milankovis refers to the collective body of work and hypotheses developed by Serbian astronomer and geophysicist Milutin Milanković. His primary contribution to scientific understanding lies in his detailed mathematical calculations describing the long-term cyclical variations in Earth's orbit and axial tilt. These cycles, now known as Milankovitch cycles, are believed to be a major driving force behind Earth's glacial and interglacial periods.

Milankovitch meticulously studied three main orbital parameters: eccentricity, which is the variation in the shape of Earth's orbit from nearly circular to slightly elliptical; obliquity, which is the change in the tilt of Earth's axis relative to its orbital plane; and precession, which is the wobble of Earth's axis. He proposed that these variations alter the amount and distribution of solar radiation reaching Earth's surface, thereby influencing global climate over thousands of years.

His groundbreaking work, published primarily in the early to mid-20th century, provided a theoretical framework that linked astronomical mechanics to paleoclimatology. While initially met with skepticism, the Milankovitch cycles have since been widely accepted within the scientific community and are a fundamental component of modern climate models. Evidence from ice cores and ocean sediments strongly supports the correlation between these orbital cycles and historical climate shifts, including the ice ages.
