Mikroformátumok are a system of simple, open specification microdata formats for embedding machine-readable information in human-readable content such as HTML. They allow web crawlers and other software to extract specific types of data, like contact information or event details, directly from web pages without needing complex parsing techniques. The core idea is to add small, standardized attributes to existing HTML elements.

Several mikroformátumok exist, each designed for a particular type of data. For instance, hCard is used for representing contact information, hCalendar for events, and hReview for reviews. These formats leverage existing HTML attributes like class and rel to denote the meaning of the data. For example, a contact name might be enclosed in a span with the class "fn" (for "formatted name"), and an address in a div with the class "adr".

The primary benefit of using mikroformátumok is improved search engine optimization and enhanced user experience. Search engines can more easily understand and index content, potentially leading to richer search results. Applications can also directly consume this data, allowing for features like importing contact details into an address book or adding an event to a calendar with a single click. While newer technologies like Schema.org offer a more comprehensive vocabulary, mikroformátumok remain relevant for their simplicity and ease of implementation on existing websites. They represent an early and influential step in making web content more structured and machine-readable.
