Migueletes is a term that has referred to different military units throughout Spanish history. Historically, it most famously designated light infantry units, often mounted, that were organized as militias or irregular forces. These units were known for their agility, speed, and ability to conduct reconnaissance, skirmishing, and harassment tactics. Their effectiveness often lay in their local knowledge and ability to operate independently.

The term originated in the 18th century, with the formation of the *Regimiento de Migueletes de Cataluña* in 1715. This unit was part of the Spanish Army and was composed of Catalan volunteers. They played significant roles in various conflicts, including the Peninsular War, where they were noted for their guerrilla warfare against Napoleon's forces. Over time, the composition and role of migueletes units evolved, adapting to changing military doctrines and political landscapes.

In more modern times, the term has been associated with regional police forces. For instance, in Catalonia, the *Mossos d'Esquadra*, the regional police force, are sometimes colloquially referred to as migueletes, harkening back to the historical Catalan militia. This usage highlights a continuity of a civic defense tradition, though their modern role is entirely different from their historical military counterparts, focusing on law enforcement and public security.
